What does figurative language look like when we use it in our writing?

Teenagers across America typically use colorful language when interacting with their peers, potential sweetheart interests, teachers, parents, and get this, even in class! Their language is filled with the exuberance only found in the nature of an adolescents mind. How fascinating it must be to have a collection of idioms, synecdoches, metonymy's, personified concepts, paradoxes, metaphors and more floating around in one's head just waiting to burst out into the world?

Well, here is the first opportunity to spill ideas out into an open forum that is ready and waiting for the lexical, phonological, orthographic, and syntactic figurative styles of speeches. All you have to do is eloquently respond to the writing prompt and, if you feel adventurous, one person's blog response.

Here's the writing prompt:
The streets of New York are clogged with the odoriferous scents of millions of people during rush hour in the mornings, afternoons, and evenings. Yet instead of adults recognizing that there are far too many people lurking in the midst of the chaos who bump, scream, annoy, or disrupt the daily flow of the unsuspecting teenager; adults force teens to become a part of the melee.

What unique experience have you endured, or witnessed, that would provide a sound argument for allowing young adult students the opportunity to create their own school schedule?

Guidelines:
1. Remember to use at least one type of figure of speech, such as onomatopoeia, simile, metaphor, etc.
2. Use appropriate language and grammatically correct sentences.
3. Respond to the writing prompt
4. Proofread your work before publishing it.
5. Happy writing!

  3. Every morning when Im taking the train i see all these people rushing through to be able to get to their destinations on time. Some of them get irritated and act like animals. This rush that is going on on the daily basis is not healthy for us young adults because we get frustrated and sometimes we dont want to get out of our houses to deal with all the stress that is going on in our society. I believe that if we are allowed to make our own schedule we will be more productive and the seeds of our generation are going to blossom creating a better future for our society and the next generations.

  4. This passage is very interesting as i read throughout the passage.I can tell there are some Phonological F.O.S being used in the description to add on to the visual aspects of the rush hour in N.Y.
I see a hyperbole being used to describe the smell of the city. As you infer about the teens and adults walking around causing chaos.
This is very unique that you infer upon teens and adults based upon the information and sterotypes that are available to gather in the open.

  5. Teenagers are people who are now starting to go through the true stages of life. The most important part of that experience is their education in school. Now becoming most reasponsible, teenagers should have the choice to plan their own school schedules. This is nessecery because it gives them a chance to responsibly build thier lives while also going to school when most convienent for them. Going to school for a number of hours a day is better decided amoung the students who know when they function best. We should all be given this opertunity, it would be most intresting....../

  6. I am one of those teenagers that take public transportation to school every morning and only we can see how if affects us . Early in the morning you see all types of people going to school and work and it causes the trains and buses to slow down because their are so many people around . And that causes us to be late to school and we get disiplined for something that is not our fault . The smaller kids dont really have a choice because they are taken to school but they should atleast let us High schoolers pick are schedules so our education wont be affected or parents work hours either .

  7. Beep! Honk! This is all you'll ever hear in the city! You'll be lucky enough to "hear" a conversation! Our Bustling city of New York is full of adults and teenagers, like myself, that want to make a change to the way we live and view life in almost every positive aspect. Nowadays us teenagers are viewed as childish, uncontrollable and emotionally unstable, little do adults know that their are teenagers that do care about our future and are mature! The same way that their is diversity in ethnicity, language, and color their are also diversitys in Personality. I think that we should be able to alter our school schedule so we can get jobs and feel like if we run this city! Our dreams have to start somewhere! Right?!

  8. an unique experience i've witnessed that gave students the free will to make their own schedule, were good grades and great effort. students would have to get above a certain average to pass as well as get the choices of their own classes added to their schedule. getting enough credits for a certain subject allow the student to get a free period and eventually are allowed to put which ever class they want in their schedule.

  9. A unique experience i am going to edure in the future is when the government cuts off the school metrocards. i personally feel that it is unfair. There will be fewer students going to school and getting there education because they won't have enough money to pay for 4.50 metrocards everyday of the week for a 183 days out of the school year. The graduating of students in school will dramatically drop, and will eventually lead to people going in to homeless shelters.

  10. As I read the passage, it made me think of thinks i didn't think of before. In my own opinion I do believe we should make our own schedules on the count on were the ones that know specifically what we minor and major in.

  11. While reading this passage, it made me think of times people bumped into me in the morning and i realize thats is true N.Y.C IS ALWAYS ON A RUSH, a lot of Adults just get fustrated when the train takes for ever and there late to work or to there destination. People start saying mean things and looking like they woke up on the wrong side of the bed.

  12. In a way, creating our own school schedule is symbolic for responibility. Education is important to the lives of so many especially the youth. It decides where the path of our life will lead us. In college, students are liable to make their own schedule. Why not high school? It'll give us better oppurtunities to have a job and take of ourselves. One step closer to the real word. Some students have a problem getting to school on time, such as myself. Currently doing my best to fix that. Some students become discouraged and decide to drop out. Being able to alter our schedules will distribute preparation for college. Inwhich that will prepare us for "life", when its every man for themself. Then maybe, just maybe it'll influence more youth to attend school. As you can see, just one schedule we create ourselves can leave such a positive impact on students life.

  13. Reading this passage was very interesting because i do believe us young adults should be able to make our own schedules but than i also believe we should just kept it the way it's been. Waking up every morning is ruff because everyone is rushing to get to work or to school. People dont realize that everyone is tried and also need to get somewhere on time. Yong adults really shouldn't make there own schedules because teenagers now a days just will drop-out or cut.

  14. Sheesh!!When i read this it actually made me laugh,"Teenagers want to make their own schedule" Life is not an easy token, just like when u need a token for the train in the moring...what do you do?..you buy it...why do u buy it...because thats the law. I just believe living up to our expectations of life is what would make us a better person in the future. No wonder why Ms. Millen complains about students being late to class even if its one minute after our class time.

  15. rushing threw the hals brushing everyone and tackling half the people you dont like.this is the complex tramatic sheduale i have now.now if i had the chance to make my own sheduale id make it so that i dont have to move so far threw hallways and crowds of people who will take my preenc as a bad thing.the majority of all students have problems with one another.so to make it easier why not allow them to be as far as possible.making my own sheduale would be all my classes on one floor so that i can just jump from room to room on time and wiht out a problem.itll be an amazing learning experince.because in thereal world you cant choose who u work with or even live close i actually leave to.so itll be a wake up call when i am in th reall world.a fish into salt water thing just feeling the break of water and sour taste of whats to come.but now i have to endor all this pointless anger from people i dont like and people who dont like me.why allow me to suffer this pointless cycle of hate and fustration.it gets old like trippin over your own laces everyday.

  16. This Passage is actually intresting. It makes you laugh,"Teenagers want to create their own schedule". Teenagers should'nt be trusted with the responsibility to create their own schedule because most teens would decide to create a small schedule and it can actually affect their future. All students have an issuse with eachother but changing their own scheduale won't help the problem because in the "Real World" you can't choose the people you work or interact with. Teens need to learn to work around there issues with one another.

  17. Its pretty manifest that the street of New York are complete hell all the pushing, dirty looks, litter, pollution, cursing, and just reckless people are part of the liability of NYC.The egoist of people needs are a state of mind of becoming apart of the melee and its sad how there are less ecstatic or elate people who do hold the door for you or do say excuse me and to just be civility.i totally agree that i been apart of dispute and be apart of a liability that had occur in me talking public transportation and its unjust.that why we should pick our own sheduale we are not just angry teenagers but like young adults who have as much knowledge as wall street people well i think so.....robots(TEACHERS)JUST CANT MANDATE US WITH US BAD ICECREAM ON A SUNNY DAY.so us educated teenagers should control our destiny and not bored us with classes like taekwondo.

A unique experience that i have endured,or witnessed.About adults and young adolescents. Is that the city life is not easy.Rush hour is called exactly that for a reason.Adolescents need to get out even earlier then adults.Thats what i do im always early i dont have to worry about any complications.I also can take my time getting to where i need to be.So people bump, scream, annoy,or disrupt the daily flow of adolescents without any empathy.Everyone has to get somewhere, everyone has somewhere to go.So if they have to bump,or shove to get to their destination they will.

  21. Time affects our education in many different ways. Everyday I see how trains, buses, and car traffics are slow and people are waiting for hours long, and they seem to depend on their transportation to get to school. This effects our time schedule because some people have good transportation, while others don't. Everyone should be able to manage their own type of schedule thay they can be flexible more with and is reasonable with us and the school.

  22. In this worl d you walk around and you see a bunch of disaster. Most of these disasters occur within the teenager. Its true parents now in day dont now who to raise there kids. meaning they walk around like if the had no maners and no scense of humor ...it logical that people when get on public transit would be rushed and wanting to get to the distenation as quick as posible.within that period of time there pushing, smells, and loud voices that make people unconftable.i say i cant blame every one who acts like a fool outside there house because you never know what went on that current day

  23. i am also one of the many students that take public transportation to and from school. it is very difficult to get to school on time when having to depend on the buses and trains everyday.i feel it would be a great thing if students were able to create their owm school schedules.not only will they be able to leave school before the rush hour. imagine leaving school after a hard day and trying to get on the train and get pushed back off by the many people crowding the doors!!!its riculious...also kids will be able to prove responisbility by creating their own schedules.

  27. Young adults should be able to make their own schedules. Mainly, because if they don't they're going to complain. And seriously, do you want the "children of the future" to bitch and complain. Like 10 years from now, some bratty ass adult with no life is going to say "I failed in life, because the school didn't make me- make my own schedule". Just let them go to school at night, that way all the freaks and child predators can attack their asses!

  28. On the subway, the bus or any other public transportation, adults are always having arguments with teenagers. Adults assume teenagers are all obnoxious and disrespectful so they always blame the teens for whatever reason. Many even try keeping an eye on teens, just in case they're going to to get robbed or assaulted. Teenagers should be able to make they're own schedule to be seperated from all the adults that travel along with them in the rush hours. THis will diminish all the controversies going on.

  29. well ; i Think Teens should be able too make they own Schedule . The Reason i Say they should make they own Schedule because of the fact you all think us teens are young adults. So if we are young adults we have the right too make our own decision . Plus the Fact of how majority of Adults ( Principle`s ) want us stundents in school by 8:30 - 9:00 soo the MTA Transportation be too pack in the morning . This is How the fights and etc break out . i Also think we should make our own Schedule because i think we should be able to leave school when we want too .

Yong adults really shouldn't make there own schedules because teenagers now a days just will drop-out or cut. Letting us young alduts make our own schedule helps us now before we go out into the real world helping and letting us have a responsibilty in life. Most people will take the advantage of it. The worst time taking NYC transportation is during the morning between 730-900 am and in the evening between 5-6 pm. During these hours thats when people are in the worst moods ever. Us young adluts shouldn't make our own scedules makes life is not want we want, we have to deal with alot of things we don't wanna do but hey thats just life.

  31. i feel that as a teenager what people do in this world is so useless. Both teenager and adults always wanna talk about what they think is right an what they think is wrong. By making our own schedule therfore we should have no more excuses about school tardiness. This should prepare us for the future which is soon to come. We should be entitled to our own rights. As young adults growing we should have a little more understanding.

  33. I believe that at the times we are in now teenagers should be able to create their own schedules. "If i had a dime for every time i heard teenagers shouldn't be in charge of their own schedules i'd have a couple of quarters". Even if teenagers choose what they want to choose their making their decisions. Maybe students want to choose times that they can arrive to the school on time.

Now me personally i havent bumped into many people or complain about trains, metrocards and busses. Im happy to have what is necessary to make a living. But i can see how this may stress people. Now , i shall also complain. i read some posts and i disagree the idea of taking off metrocards for students. this will greatly jeapordize our future , and cause people to question our intelegence. This will affect me because i already spend about 80 dollars a month on metrocard , then they go and raise it a quarter. it may not seem like much but as it accumilates it becomes a great number. i hope this hits the hearts of the idiots that plan on taking off metrocards.

  41. The pushing and bumping doesnt only affect the teens of New York but all those who take public transportations. Honestly half the time the bumping and rushing is caused by a numerous amount of over excited teens that have nothing else to do . The people who should be worried the most are the elderly in my mind because they already have so many exsisting problems and seem so fragile. The idea of students developing their own schdule sounds like an okay idea for some , because there wouldnt be anymore excuses for tardiness , but in all reality of it if it isnt the train that made you late someone will balme the weather . Basically I think that a personalized schdule will do nothing for those who just dont care .

  42. As a young adult, I believe that we should be able to create our own schedules. If we were able to make our own schedules, there would be more people attending school. Teachers would NEVER let us make our own schedules because they feel that we're either irresponsible. We won't have to take classes that we don't like. Neither would we have to go half way across the school for our next class. Also, there would be less drama because people would most likely never bump into one another.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I agree with Kassandra because if the schools will let us do our own schedules, the students will not have to deal with adults going to work in the morning. We can manifest to the adults, that we are grown to make our choices with our scheduals. The students can mandate to the classes we need; take on a daily basis and also intericate with passenger on the afternoon rush hour. If we were actually given the opportunity to do our own schedules this will be the chance to show our teachers that were responsible young adults.

  44. When school started I would take the bus to school almost regularly I hated it the adults as well as a other teenagers were on stuck on perpetual jerkiness they’d push and speak vulgarly to each other I would try and block everyone out with loud rock music. It almost never worked because I could always still see and feel the hatred of every being rushing to school, work or wherever they must be getting to. By the time I have to push my way through the massive amounts of bodies on the bus or train am already flustered and late for school. If it was up to me I would make it that adults and tens wouldn’t occupy the same method of transportation at the same time. No one likes going to school/work mad because of a bad experience they had on the way there. The schedules for students for school should be of their choice because it provides the streets with less rush and it can cause make less chaos occur. Also maybe the view that adults have on teenagers will chance because they will see us less often maybe they will start to see that we are not so bad as we sometimes may seem.

  45. I BELIEVE THAT YOUNGE ADULTS SHOULD MAKE THEIR OWN SCHEDULE BECAUSE IT IS MORE EASIER FOR THEM. IT IS ALREADY BAD ENOUGH THAT NOT ENOUGH STUDENTS ATTENDING SCHOOL OR EVEN WANTING TO GO TO SCHOOL.STUDENTS DONT WANT TO DEAL WITH THE PUSHING AND SHOVING AND PACKED BUSES AND TRAINS.I HAVE EXPERIENCED THAT THE BUSES BECOME OVERLY PACKED AND THE BUS DRIVERS LET PEOPLE AFTER PEOPLE ON THE BUS KNOWING THEIR IS NO MORE ROOM. WHY? FOR THEIR OWN PERSONAL GAIN THEY DONT CARE OR DO THEY? ITS BETTER THAT US YOUNG ADULTS HAVE OUR SCHEDULE SO THAT WE DO NOT HAVE TO DEAL WITH THE DELAYS IN THE A.M . ITS BETTER FOR US OUR GENERATION AND OUR NEXT GENERATION AND FUTURE

  46. Every now and then people run into problems and hyperbole of people in the subway. Because of this fact people tend to get in a bad mood not caring who they hurt with their words or even less who they focus their anger with out anyone knowing whats going on until point of attack. although things happen we young people have to consider the act of not doing what ever they like when upset considering its not others peoples fault because they are trying to get somewhere as much as they are. everyone has a point in their life or points when they dont care about anything else then of their own self, sometimes when you may feel you are going to act a certain way they should stay home instead...

  48. I don't take the train to school and I always decide to walk instead of taking the bus but it would be a major change in this society to let us students to be able to create our own schedule. I personally don't think its a good idea especially in a city like this one. If we are able to create our schedule and decide the time we go to school everyone is going to want to attend it in the afternoon since the main problem is waking up early. The chaos and the melee would still be there when we are on our way to school, so to let us take charge of our schedule isn't something i would look forward too. I rather have that experience when applying for classes in college if Im able to.

  49. The majority of teenagers have to go to school in the morning time, along with working adults and parents with smaller children. This means that early in the morning all we see on bus stops and train stations are people packed up waiting to arrive to there destination on time. Im one of these teens. I live approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes away from my school and dealing with the MTA is like someone driving to work and stuck in traffic. It would be best if highschool students have the opportunity to choose their own schedule. Like this we learn the responsibility we need for college and we make the journey to school everyday more suitable. I think it benefits us all, if we like our schedule the way it is, we keep it...if not we change it. All according to our classes.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I personally dont agree Christine. The token we work for is our education. The fact that we would get an opportunity to change our own schedule is a great benefit. It shows great responsibility and we learn how to manage time. This way, when we go into college we know how to manage. Our task is to do the best we can in highschool and to get into college. Having the opportunity is a mere benefit and its another form of preparation for us. I do think you bring up a great point. Life isnt easy and life is a lesson learn, the lesson being that our motivation to do well is a key and we should take what ever chance life hands us to make the path easier.
